New member and studio with a Amek Big

Graham Langley founded Amek in 1973 with Nick Franks. Since then, AMEK and TAC recording consoles have been the choice of demanding audio professionals for over 25 years.

My 44 is bone stock and pristine. In fact was one of the last built. Came out of a church broadcast facility and had not been used in years.

My 28 has all the mods. Was one of the first built. But now is showing it's age and needs some TLC.

At the moment I'm serving the MPS-15 supply for the 44. A new IF1515 and fans.

Would love to hear your thoughts (and maybe some A/B comparisons???) on sound of your 28 mod vs. stock 44?

Check out some of the pictures on my fb: www.facebook.com/theloopstudios
they are generally "arty" but it looks good!

Just an FYI... I saw an advert on Ebay by GRS for new AMEk BIG manuals for $89.

Cheers,

That was fun just serviced my MPS-15. Replace one of the IF1515 modules. Re cap the other and new fans.

An update on the progress at Beehive Sound.

Amek Big 44:
- Serviced power supply and aligned by TAS
- Caps that needed replacing by TAS
- Main processor battery replaced by TAS
- Aligned output buss drivers by TAS
- Calibrated meter cards by TAS
- Upgraded mic preamps
- Upgrade buss drivers
- Serviced automation PC, new fans, floppy and SSD HD
- Added after fader metering switches to channels 1-24 and 29-44
- In process of adding 2 more 8 channel meter cards to channels 29-44 for a total of 40 channels of metering

The testing shows all 44 mono channels have a frequency response of 10hz-120khz +/- 0.5db so very flat and a lot of sonic headroom.

I believe this will be the only Big 44 that has 40 channels of metering once done. It was a field upgrade option. Change out the Perspex and add 2 8 channel meter cards. Thanks to Dave from TAS for the parts. Still need one more 8 channel meter card. Or non-working meter cards with at least two channels working for the Amek meter driver chip.
