Anyone have a list of what caps and values are needed to recap a channel and the center section of a BIG 44 with Virtual Dyn....?

It's not that old and they used 105 degree caps. Why do you need to replace them?

The Desk is from '95 so seems like its time...? Dont think the channels need re-capping? Also the center section isnt currently working so I'd like to do a full overhaul of it.

The last Big 3 I rebuilt had most all the el signal caps removed. I left in a cap in front of the VCA and left a couple for the SSM driver chips that show DC offsets. The large input blocking cap off the stereo mix sum opamp was replaced with a ferrite bead to trap rf and cell phone crap. I used ADA4898-2 opamps for the stereo sum and LME49720 for the rest. THAT 2180 VCA's were also fitted.

It's like when your ears pop after landing in a jet.

Id be interested in hearing what your mod sounds like vs. a re-cap...? Anything you can show? Obviously that would be cheaper to do...?

Audio Maintenance Limited.... (http://www.audiomaintenance.com/) can provide you with a Excel spreadsheet of the Caps used in all of the Amek consoles. They can also provide the new caps for you. Excellent folks.

Click the contact link at the top, and Colin will hook you up.

I did get with Colin and ordered the caps and a manual from him. Was around $300 for ALL the caps for the desk (40-BIG1, 4-BIG2, and 1-BIG3). Ill begin recapping the console and show my progress/issues. Also got a desoldering iron to make the process go faster, hopefully is a good one. Once i get a few channels done id like to try and send a couple off to Jim and do a proper A/B comparison of a stock channel vs. his mod. I definitely plan on posting my results as i move forward with this too.

Thanks again for everyones input and help with all my questions!!!

Looking forward to seeing your progress! A friend of mine is looking seriously at getting a BIg, and would love to see your progress too. Post photos! On this site, it is easier to post the photos on another server, and link to them when posting. This site doesn't handle photos well.

Take your time desoldering and removing the caps, to take great care in not damaging the traces on either side of the board. You may also consider leaving some gap between the new cap and the boards when you install the new caps. If you leave about 1/2" or so, it will also make them easier to replace next time, and easier to check for problems if there are any with your recap job. There are always some through hole connections not made after a recap....

Treat it like this will NOT be the only time this console gets recapped, because it may not be. You will be glad you you did. These consoles will only go up in value, and they could be around for decades more.

Hope all goes well!

It's best to not replace caps on modules that will be sent for mods or rework. Also, when replacing those caps, orient them correctly. Most manufacturers place them with the + pin facing the opamp output pins.

Measure the DC offset polarity and then place the caps in the correct way. You may find a good number of them were put in the wrong way. If offsets are below 5 mv, usually you can short them out.
