amek angela good deal? and other new owner questions

Hey guys,

Im close to deciding if ill buy a used amek angela but i think i need your insight!

So here's the deal , the desk is 24 ch , 36 frame , amek angela , it's the "grey" color not the blue-ish one it has 6 patchbays on it on the right hand side and +3 modules which no one knows if they work or not.

I understand there's a fuss about automation with those consoles and as i've been informed from another post concerning the angela, it has to do with the dbx vca's and stuff. BUT we don't really care about that cause the console doesn't have automation.

So we took one module out and saw an automation plug under the fader and i was wondering if the console *had* automation and it was removed or it was an "ahead" planning from AMEK.

Seller says everything works well , other than some small knob scratches etc, but the console has never been recaped (a project which we bravely think we can tackle on our own , to keep the costs down :P)

The price is 4.500 euros cash.

1)Do you think this is a good deal?

2)Another big question, we currently own a DDA CS8 console (with midas PSU), i know it's a live console and all that, but i know that is a super clean console too.
Will we hear a big difference?

3)What about service / issues etc?

4)And lastly is angela a console which you can "push" and get something out when mixing?

Thank you very much for your time guys, it's kinda a big deal for me and my current economical state so im trying ti figure out if its a good option or not ....

Hi,

My understanding is that a lot of the "Grey" consoles were factory fitted with the automation unlike the "Blue" series. The electronics are exactly the same in each model.
If the automation was not fitted, then there was a plate fitted over the automation switches next to the fader. The automation card is separate to the main channel card. If it's not installed, you should be fine.

Recapping is a major drag. Over 1000 to replace. If you are going to do it, it took me 2 hours per channel which also included a full strip down and clean.
Get yourself a good desoldering iron with a vacuum. I used a Pace Micro MP1.

The Angela is very easy to work on and maintain. Mine is a Blue series 24/28 which was in terrible condition, but cost $2100AUD (around EU$1500). I'd suggest bargaining it down if it has not had a recap as you say.

As for quality, I am totally in love with this desk.

Anthony.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer!

the amek module i think had 2 "Cards" or card-like plugs to go in the console and near/under the fader it had a plug of another "style" like an old IDE for computer HDD which wrote automation under it but was empty!

I don't really know if they bought a new console and got bothered to take the automation out, i mean , it's a new console maaan :p But who knows.

I don't know if they did a good job tho nor if they changed the faders.Do they need to be chagned btw?

I would say that recapping a angela is a kind of easy task. There isnt that much. Just did my trident s80 and my angela looks easier. With a good desoldering tool of course. Good thing is that its cheap with component so if tou are descent with a soldering iron its bot a big deal. Just take some time.
