**Amek BIG Power Supply Schematics**

Postby c.smith88 » Thu Jun 30, 2016 3:17 pm

Hi All!

I'm new to the community, but I've been wanting to recap my Amek BIG power supply, and was hoping that someone may have access to the schematics... Maybe in Pdf format??

I know that you can purchase technical manuals, and maybe that's just what I'll have to end up doing, but I wanted to put it out there to see if there was a chance.

Thanks!

Scratch that.... Technical Manual on the way.

If anyone would like certain pages, I may be able to do that in the future.

The power suply units were made by a different company, only the filterboards and psu layout are in the service manual.
The service manual states that any problems with the psu should be fixed by Amek and no schematics are suplied.
For this reason I took my psu to a professional and specialised company for a complete refurbishment

Thanks for the response!

I'm actually contemplating the same... I wanted the technical manual regardless, and I'll probably be getting my master section worked on anyway, so sending the power supply for an overhaul and upgrade may not be a bad idea either.

When the job on my psu was done the company send me an email with a list of what was repaired..

All caps. Some were visual bad and leaking, others which looked ok had very high esr and not the proper values. All caps are replaced with 105C caps instead of the used 85C's
Bad solder joints, aged cooling paste, bad resistors, bad trimmers and more.
I was totaly shocked with all the problems and happy that I let a specialist switching psu expert to do the checkup and repairs.
It was more than just a "blind" recap.
Good luck with yours!

Hello C.SMITH....

The best AMEK service for console rebuilds, upgrades and mods...as well as power supply rebuilds with updates and mods is GRS / Studio Systems & Technologies. info@grssystems.com

They also build awesome new power supply systems.

Also, which power supply system do you have? The AMEK BIG consoles came with either the AMEK 401 power supply (by DelAire in Ireland) of the AMEK MPS-15 or AMEK-850 power supply units. We used to have an AMEK BIG console that came with a AMEK 401 switcher PSU. It ALWAYS broke down at least once or twice a year and specific parts are no longer available to fix them now. Ours kept burning holes through the PCB boards in various internal power modules. It was a horrid unit.

We had GRS / SST build us an amazing Linear PSU for the BIG and it's been running for over 10 years now with zero problems, 24/7/365. Very high quality units. We also have 3 other GRS / SST PSU's running our other consoles...two others in the studio and one is in our mobile unit.

Just some FYI info that might help.

Cheers,

Greg

Thanks for the reply, AS7

I have an 850..., and I'm prettttty sure I'll be sending the PSU and my master section down to Jim Williams (I'm located out of Alberta, Canada) for a rebuild, though I also looked in to GRS (that's where I ordered my technical manual from).

OK, great about the manual.

Our AMEK BIG came originally with an AMEK 401 switching PSU. Then with all of the problems with it, we bought a used AMEK 850 PSU. But it needed work too, so we had GRS do a full rebuild and upgrade to it. This mad a big difference in the consoles audio performance.

Then we had a lot of mods installed in the BIG console with new IC chips, but they needed more amps that the 850 PSU could put out. So we had GRS build us a monster PSU and that was the ticket! Huge difference with the GRS PSU. Our mixes used to sound sorta flat when the console was running full out with lots of high level stuff happening. With the new PSU, it was like a different board. Much clearer mixes and the bottom end was a lot more solid and had a lot more dynamics.

Anyway, check out their rebuild & upgrade services and their new PSUs...especially if you're adding some hot op-amp mods to the BIG.

Here's a link that has a lot of their rebuild, upgrade and new stuff...I have them bookmarked, LOL

Good luck with all.
