With over 14 years of experience shipping large format consoles and tape decks, I will offer some information and advice that I hope is useful to you. There are two categories: DOMESTIC and EXPORT shipping.

The preferred method of shipping is to pick it up yourself if at all possible.
This will save you money, and also give you peace of mind. But most of the time this is not possible.

If shipping domestically by truck, most large format consoles and tape decks DO NOT NEED TO BE CRATED if you ship via air ride truck with a high value carrier. Not crating a console will save you money – and I believe it’s safer if done right.
The trucking company I use exclusively is a high value division of North American Van Lines. They do not carry house wares or load pieces on top of each other. They just carry high value items and I have had zero damage claims in the past 4 years!
The console or tape machine is plastic wrapped and then blanket wrapped and secured to the inside of the truck. Very large consoles might require 4 men at pick up and delivery.
There are cheaper methods, but they usually do not have good results.

Here are the parameters for using NAVL:
The shipment should weigh at least 400-500 lbs and the equipment should be on a pedestal or console stand. Multi track machines usually have wheels.

I will offer NAVL shipping to forum members through Odyssey Pro Sound. Our discounted rates are better than what you will get direct.

You must provide the following information in order form me to give you an accurate rate quote:

Insurance Value:

Pick up location: (full name and address – specify if residence or business)
Contact Name:
Phone Number:
Preferred pick up date:
Is pickup location accessible to large trucks?

Delivery location: (full name and address – specify if residence or business)
Contact Name:
Phone Number:

Is delivery location accessible to large trucks?

You can fax this information to 978-744-7224 or email

I’ve found that UPS Supply Chain (formerly Menlo, and before that Emery) has the best rates for shipments between 100-400 lbs. But these shipments need to be well packed and/or crated. They ship by ground and air. You can find them on-line.

All air shipments whether domestic or export needs crating. And finding a quality crater is important and some times not easy. The least expensive method to export is to ship to the closest airport and have the buyer pick it up there.
I use Nippon Express ( export shipments because they have the best rates.

UPS Supply Chain will also work for exporting lighter shipments overseas.
