CPS 450 +24v Rail Goes Down and Takes Meterbridge with it

Postby robertphilbeck » Wed Feb 25, 2015 12:06 am

Hi folks,

I've located a Soundcraft Repair Center in Atlanta, but want to take advantage of the opportunity to become an educated customer should I choose to let someone else do the work.

The +24v LED in my CPS 450b is out, and though my Delta still passes audio, the Meterbridge is dead. The +24v LED is out whether the PSU is plugged into the console or not. I've checked and double checked all fuses in the PSU. None are blown and all brackets are firm and tight.

I'd like to understand if this is a typical issue with an obvious fix and if these PSUs can be reliable after a repair. Any thoughts or guidance is appreciated.

It could be a faulty/failed voltage regulator for the 24V output.
From memory, 24V is used only in the meters.
There was a point in time when, on a number of PSU models, the voltage regulators were mounted in sockets. These proved to be "less than perfect" when it came to reliability. The reliability issue ws resolved by soldering the regulator pins instead of relying on the socket's contacts for connection.

Thank you. I swapped a few regulators around, they are the steel plug in type, and the issue followed the regulator. There are three LM317kcp+'s and two LT1083-ck9309.

Are there substitutes available or should I stick with the exact part?

Replace with the original type - no need to use anything else.

Circling back to say thank you and an update. Replaced the voltage regulators , which was a 5 minute job and ran less than $15. All is working perfectly.

Great forum and thanks again. I do not see a contribution link anywhere to help out with supporting the forum.
