JH-16 24 track meter lights

The JH-16 and later the JH-24 were (and still are) one of the industry standards for 24-track analog audio recording, and were installed in many audio recording studios starting in the early 70s.

JH-16 24 track meter lights

Postby Glenrose Media » Wed Oct 31, 2007 10:28 pm

I just picked up a prime JH-16 full 24 track machine; however all the lamps illuminating the meter bridge are burned out (I beleieve the deck sat in the closed studio for about 10 years). Anyway, pin leads, about 1/4" long, 24V DC. Descirbed in manual, in "spare parts kit #2" as L28v/40k. At least 1 old supplier listed them as T-9410-174-1. Can send pics if needed. would like to get these fixed. any help appreciated.

Pull out some of the old bulbs (forceps help!) and look closely at the white plastic base for a three or four digit number. I have to use a magnfier to read those sorts of tiny numbers.

It's been too long since I relamped one of those for me to recall the "industry standard" number.

They are 28v bi-pin lamps running at 24v in a futile attempt to make them last longer!! HaHa.
If you can't survive without the meters being lit up, change them for 5mm yellow or now white LEDS with a resistor in the way. This is easy on JH24s because the bulbs are on the meter board that comes off relatively easily, doing this on a JH16 starts as a nightmare and moves rapidly downhill as I recall.

Bi-Pin lamps for MCI

7387 rings as bell as the industry (US) part no. There are 2 sizes of BiPin lamps, and this is the larger one.
Whatever it is, it's 28v.

Replace with LEDs and a drop resistor and you are done for long long time.
Sand the white LEDs to change the dispersion of light
That is what I do with all lams now.

I've just finished replacing the meter lights in my JH24-16. The bulbs in your machine should be the same, 7387.
I got mine from JKL components (http://www.jkllamps.com). They're 20 for $20 or 100 for $50. I bought 100. In a pinch they can be soldered on to the existing wires and be used for input status lights also.
